Alongside Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson, Alexander Girard is another design icon of the post-war American design. Born in America, raised in Italy, architect from education, worked in Sweden and New York. His focus was definitely into the textile design and his main source of inspiration and passion was art of South America, Asia and East Europe. Alexander created interior design concepts for stores, including T&O (Textiles and Objects) shop in New York. He had a huge interest for folk art what we can see in his work, often recognized by bold colors and shapes. I think he is also a big influence for modern designers - first coming to mine mind is- Sandra Isaksson design. I'm showing you just few of Alexander Girard designs for kids.
Alexander was so excited about Marilyn Neuhart's dolls that he asked her to make 100 of them for the opening of Textile & Objects store in 1961. The store was not a big success at that time but the dolls were selling pretty well ;-) I'm not into dolls, but this ones really grab my hart! interview with John and Marilyn Neuhart
